Potential NDVI as a baseline for monitoring ecosystem functioning
نویسندگان
چکیده
Baseline data are needed to determine the overall magnitude and direction of change in ecosystem functioning. This letter presents an approach to estimate potential NDVI fromenvironmental variables and training data of actual NDVI in nature reserves. Patterns of deviations of actual NDVI from the baseline generally correspond with land-use types in the western United States.

Animal Habitat Quality and Ecosystem Functioning: Exploring Seasonal Patterns Using Ndvi
Many animal species have developed specific evolutionary adaptations to survive prolonged periods of low energy availability that characterize seasonal environments. The seasonal course of primary production, a major aspect of ecosystem functioning, should therefore be an important factor determining the habitat quality of such species. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the relationship be...
متن کاملUse of descriptors of ecosystem functioning for monitoring a national park network: a remote sensing approach.
Baseline assessments and monitoring of protected areas are essential for making management decisions, evaluating the effectiveness of management practices, and tracking the effects of global changes. For these purposes, the analysis of functional attributes of ecosystems (i.e., different aspects of the exchange of matter and energy) has advantages over the traditional use of structural attribut...
متن کاملNOAA AVHRR NDVI/MODIS NDVI Predicts Potential to Forest Resource Management in Çatalca District of Turkey
Çatalca, located on the ridge between the Marmara and the Black Sea, is a rural district of Istanbul having the temperate climate. Landuse involves farming and forestry. This study makes a contribution and revises the applicability of two medium spatial resolution satellite sensors, NOAA AVHRR NDVI and MODIS (Terra) NDVI, for prediction to potential forest resource management in Çatalca distric...
متن کاملPlant species richness and shrub cover attenuate drought effects on ecosystem functioning across Patagonian rangelands.
Drought is an increasingly common phenomenon in drylands as a consequence of climate change. We used 311 sites across a broad range of environmental conditions in Patagonian rangelands to evaluate how drought severity and temperature (abiotic factors) and vegetation structure (biotic factors) modulate the impact of a drought event on the annual integral of normalized difference vegetation index...
متن کاملUse of Normalized Difference Water Index for Monitoring Live Fuel Moisture
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) were compared for monitoring live fuel moisture in a shrubland ecosystem. Both indices were calculated from 500 m spatial resolution Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflectance data covering a 33 month period from 2000 to 2002. Both NDVI and NDWI were positively correlated with live ...
